Things Are About to Change…
Over the past decade, my wife and I have developed consistent routines. Every few months, we make small adjustments—optimizing or shifting our schedule to adapt to family needs, work, doctor appointments, and everything in between. Over time, this refined routine has become a foundation, a platform we build the rest of our days and lives around.
You find success in structure, but that same structure can make you hesitant to change, rigid, or resistant to growth.
At Tavelli Co., things are changing in a big way this year for our Sonoma County collection agency. It’s uncomfortable, but it’s also a slow, steady process—and so far, the results are stunning.
Finding Success in Hiring (More Than Just a Friendly Place to Work)
One of the defining strengths of our business is the people who choose to work here. Our high employee retention rate often surprises outsiders, and during a recent meeting, an outside consultant asked what was behind our hiring process. How were we consistently finding such strong candidates?
The honest answer is that there’s no secret formula—just a long-standing commitment to being intentional. While I learned the basics of interviewing back in college, the real driver of our hiring success has very little to do with technique and everything to do with mindset.
A Simple Guiding Principle
Over the years, we’ve tried to approach hiring with a simple guiding principle: find someone we can support, someone who will grow here, and someone who will strengthen the team around them. We’re not just looking for productivity. We’re looking for mutual benefit.
Our goal is to build a workplace grounded in responsibility, opportunity, and character. We look for people who want to contribute, who value integrity, and who understand that joining a company means joining a community. When we hire someone, we want them to make our team better—and we want our team to do the same for them.
Upcoming Changes
As we continue to grow and flourish, one of the main refinements we are optimizing within our company is defining “verticals.” When we were a smaller Sonoma County collection agency, our management staff often wore many hats. Now, our leaders are gradually shifting toward their strengths.
Is this person great at operations? Great—then that’s what they will focus on moving forward. Is this person strong in sales? Excellent—let’s identify that and help develop those skills. Could this person be a future leader? Perfect—let’s recognize those traits in the first round of interviews.
If our company has found success in the past—and while we’ve been recognized in the industry for our exceptional customer service and deep knowledge—moving forward these strengths will only be amplified as our outside consultant continues to align our verticals and define our roles.
Clients will receive more specialized attention, and although we’ve long been known as one of the few agencies that is easy to communicate with and quick to respond, these qualities will only become more refined and optimized over time.
Developing a Sales Engine
It may come as a surprise to outsiders that our company doesn’t really have a defined sales engine. While we’ve partnered with excellent companies to grow our SEO presence, many of our clients come from referrals—people who’ve heard about us from others who’ve had positive experiences with our agency.
Because of this, many new prospects seem pleasantly surprised when they discover us. Sometimes the best companies aren’t flashy, aren’t loud, and aren’t constantly in your face. They’re simply doing the bread-and-butter things day in and day out that lead to success.
But this year marks a shift.
We’re building a true sales engine—one that reflects our values, our culture, and our commitment to serving clients with excellence. This isn’t about becoming aggressive or salesy. It’s about becoming intentional. It’s about making it easier for the right people to find us. And it’s about ensuring that our growth is steady, sustainable, and aligned with who we are.
Where We’re Headed
Change is rarely comfortable, but it’s often necessary. Just as our family routines evolve to meet the needs of life, our company is evolving to meet the needs of our future.
We’re defining roles more clearly.
We’re strengthening our leadership.
We’re building a sales engine that reflects our identity.
We’re continuing to hire people we can bless—and who bless us in return.
The foundation we’ve built over the past decade is strong. Now, we’re building upward.
